it&#039;s an extensible rails api for background work. you write against the workling api once. then you can choose which &#039;job broker&#039; you want to use to process the work. 

currently, spawn, starling + any other memcache based queue, backgroundjob, and amqp (ie for rabbitmq) is supported.
